My daughter just started school. Her first year.
I am sending her to Omani government school. I think the prices for private school in Oman are ridiculous, and I went to government school for the most part, and I turned out fine, so I hope I am right in this decision. My Omani husband thinks I am wrong, but inshaAllah.
My daughter was registered with her school a full year before the school year commencement. At the last minute my husband decided to change her school, so that was done the first week before school started. That meant, we had to go to her original school to pick up her books, because her new school would not have them.
In Oman government school there are uniforms. White dishdashas and kuma caps for the boys, and maroon or navy blue shifts for the girls, depending on the grade, with white socks, stockings, or leggings/trousers, or tops/shirts, with black shoes. As much as I disagree with it, the girls must have a white headscarf, even though they are too young for the most part to wear hijab yet. I am going to find out if my girl can wear a little white turban instead. I dunno the rules. I am a school uniform rule-breaker myself.
They do sell ready-made uniforms but most Omani mothers have their daughters' tailored.
So far my daughter insists that she loves school, but that the other children do not sit and listen. I wonder if she does, although she is a quiet, day-dreaming type of child, so perhaps she does.
Her older sister says the other girls made fun of her hair-cut, saying she looks like a boy. Most girls her age have longer hair. She has a pixie-crop, but she didn't say anything to me about not liking her hair, so I hope it was just a couple one-off comments.
So what she needed so far was: a back-pack, pencil case, pencils, pens, a small whiteboard, whiteboard markers, pencil crayons, water colour paints, a few lined notebooks, a drawing book, a ruler, a sharpener, a clear plastic file, runners, and sport shorts.
The school sent a note asking for 1.5 omr to buy a sport t-shirt with her name on it, and the school name. The problem for me is the notes are always in Arabic. As are the messages. They will text my husband, but I should visit the school and see who speaks English to ask for extra help passing messages to me.
So far I am told I should label the notebooks, and subject books, and then cover them with plastic liners to make them more difficult to tear. What else come yet, I do not know.
